Murciano Carlos Alcaraz claims first Roland Garros title

Carlos Alcaraz, a 21-year-old tennis player from Murcia, secured his first Roland Garros Championship in Paris in a dramatic five-set duel against Alexander Zverev, lasting 4 hours and 19 minutes. Alcaraz became the 10th Spaniard, male or female, to win the prominent clay-court tournament.

Before this victory, Alcaraz had claimed Grand Slam titles at the 2022 US Open (hard surface) and Wimbledon 2023 (grass), earning him recognition as the youngest male player in history to obtain three Grand Slams on different courts. This achievement broke the prior record held by fellow countryman Rafael Nadal.

Initially trailing in the contest, Alcaraz displayed impressive mental strength and persistence to reverse the momentum in his favour. Down 1-2 in sets and 2-3 in the fourth, the steadfast competitor fought back, ultimately taking the title.

Famed Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg, a six-time Roland Garros winner himself, honoured Alcaraz by presenting him with the Musketeers’ Cup during the awards ceremony.

This historic win cements Alcaraz’s position as a powerful presence in the world of professional tennis and sets him on a similar path to his compatriot Rafael Nadal.
