Residents of the Mar Menor municipalities of San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier and Torre Pacheco can finally drink tap water again after more than a week of restrictions following Storm Alice.

 

Health authorities have officially declared the water supplied by the Taibilla Canals Association (MCT) in San Pedro del Pinatar to be fully fit for human consumption, marking a major step towards the complete restoration of normal service across the Mar Menor area.

 

According to an MCT statement, this means that households and businesses in San Pedro del Pinatar can now safely use tap water for all purposes, including drinking and food preparation.

 

The public body confirmed that “the incident affecting the water supply in this municipality is now over”, following intensive cleaning and disinfection of both the affected section of the canal and the two chambers of the El Mirador reservoir, which serves the area.

 

The same reservoir also supplies water to San Javier and Los Alcázares. In these municipalities, the water is already suitable for personal hygiene, while final analyses are being carried out by the municipal services to confirm its full suitability for consumption. Once these tests are verified by the Regional Ministry of Health, the restriction will be lifted completely.

 

In Torre Pacheco and the municipality of Murcia, treated water from the MCT is already flowing through the municipal networks. Local water services are conducting comprehensive tests to confirm that the water meets health standards before it can be approved for all domestic uses.

 

The MCT has detailed the extensive work undertaken to repair and sanitise the infrastructure damaged by the storm. Crews have cleaned and disinfected 20 kilometres of canal and several key reservoirs, including those at El Mirador and Roldán.

 

The storm, which swept through the Region of Murcia just over a week ago, caused severe flooding and damage to the Taibilla canal network, forcing the MCT to declare the water unfit for consumption in multiple municipalities. The contamination occurred when floodwater entered the system, affecting supply quality across much of the Mar Menor area.

 

With San Pedro del Pinatar now fully restored and other towns close to following suit, the MCT expressed optimism that normality will soon return to all affected areas. “We hope to restore full service gradually in the remaining municipalities,” the organisation stated.
