Shameful vandalism of trees and plants continues in Águilas
There have been more incidents of deliberate sabotage of trees in the town, angering locals
Águilas councillors have condemned a string of deliberate acts of vandalism targeting the town’s green areas since September. Councillors for Green Areas and the Integral Water Cycle, Noelia Ruano and José Luis Moreno, say the attacks are “perfectly planned” to cause maximum damage in hidden spots, leading to serious water loss, environmental harm and high repair costs.“It has required more than a week’s work by two people, during which time these two workers have been unable to carry out their scheduled daily tasks,” explained Moreno, who added that damage includes cut irrigation pipes and uprooted trees.
The vandalism began with tyre cuts and damaged irrigation systems in the green belt, industrial estate and Felipe López forest park. In October, the same areas were attacked again, and “the trees planted on Calle Juan Pablo II were uprooted,” said Ruano.
Last year, the Town Council filed a formal complaint with the environmental unti of the Guardia Civil, Seprona, after several old and much-loved trees were deliberately killed when acid was poured into them on the Paseo de La Constitución and in the Plaza Virgen del Rocío.
Both councillors thanked residents for their cooperation in identifying the affected areas and trying to identify the culprits responsible, noting that most locals understand how valuable Águilas’s green spaces are and play an important role in protecting them.
