New leisure centre at Torrevieja Port to open at the end of April
The long delayed Torrevieja port development promises cinemas, bowling and restaurants
Following delay after delay, the new Paseo del Mar leisure centre at the Port of Torrevieja is finally set to open between the end of April and the beginning of May.
The concessionaire behind the project has confirmed that this will be the definitive launch window after previous forecasts, including Easter, came and went. Although most of the privately funded construction work is complete, progress slowed due to delays in surrounding redevelopment works being carried out by Torrevieja City Council to improve access and modernise the seafront.
Now, with municipal works underway, businesses preparing to move in have stepped up their efforts. Fit outs have been continuing for weeks, even at weekends, as operators race to get ready.
The waterfront complex covers more than 20,000m² facing the bay, with 8,500m² dedicated to 27 retail and hospitality units. Around 80% of the units are already leased and 100% committed, according to the managing agents.The space will focus on hospitality and leisure, in line with port regulations, and is expected to include a multiplex cinema and an American style bowling alley.
Work is also nearing completion on the large pedestrian access ramp at the main port entrance, along with LED lighting, large screens and landscaped areas designed to give the area a modern feel.
The wider regeneration project continues around the port, including Plaza de Capdepont and access roads linked to the underground car park, which opened last year and has already eased parking pressure in the town centre.The overall investment has exceeded €50 million, more than double the original €20 million estimate, with the concession granted for 50 years.
Even if some surrounding public works are still ongoing, Paseo del Mar is expected to open its doors this spring, marking a major change for Torrevieja’s traditional waterfront.
