Elderly man, 96, rescued from burning building in Águilas
The fire broke out in a first-floor apartment on Calle Robles de Águilas
A 96-year-old man was rescued from a burning apartment in Águilas on Tuesday morning, February 25, after a fire broke out in his first-floor flat.
The incident occurred on Calle Robles de Águilas, where a huge amount of white and grey smoke was seen emanating from one of the windows.
Outside on the street, neighbours were alarmed when firefighters, paramedics and local police officers sped to the scene of the fire after an emergency call was made to report the blaze.
A paramedic prepared a stretcher to treat anyone who may have been affected by the fire as soon as the ambulance arrived. According to official sources, the 96-year-old man had to be evacuated from the house as he was unable to escape on his own. Once safe, medics transferred him to the nearest hospital, Rafael Méndez de Lorca.
In addition to the elderly gentleman, two other people were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire, which started in one of the rooms of the flat, has not been revealed.
The case is currently under investigation by the Guardia Civil.
This incident is the latest in a series of house fires in the Region of Murcia, which have resulted in two fatalities and 22 people requiring medical attention over the past three months.
The most recent fatality occurred last Friday February 21, when a woman named Ángeles lost her life in a house fire in the San Felipe de Mula neighbourhood, which ultimately burned the entire property to the ground.
