British rider Samuel Levy, dies in first corner crash at amateur race in Lleida
The Alicante-based plumber and motorcycle enthusiast was killed during a multi-rider collision at the Alcarràs circuit on Sunday
Samuel Levy, a 44 year old British man who had made his home in Alicante province, died on Sunday after a serious crash during an amateur motorcycle race at the Alcarràs circuit in Lleida, Catalonia. The accident happened shortly after the race began. At 1.10pm, the starting lights went out for the JMR Cup superbike race, a championship open to amateur and newer riders, and within moments of reaching the first corner, a group of competitors went down together in a heavy collision. Levy bore the worst of it, suffering extremely serious injuries on the track.
Circuit medical staff reached him quickly and worked to stabilise him, and emergency teams carried out resuscitation attempts at the scene. Despite their efforts, his injuries proved too severe, and he died on the track before he could be transferred to hospital.
Levy had lived in Alicante for many years and was well known and well liked in Spain's amateur racing paddocks. He ran his own plumbing and heating business, work he combined with a genuine passion for motorcycle racing whenever his schedule allowed. This season had marked a step up for him competitively, as alongside his regular JMR Cup outings, he had entered the Yamaha R1 Cup, a promotional trophy within the Spanish Speed Cup, keen to test himself on more competitive grids.
Just two weeks before the accident, Levy had shared news on social media that mechanical problems with his bike would force him to miss a couple of races. "A bitter end to this year's championship," he wrote at the time. "We've only had two races and she's given up on me. The R1 needs to be repaired, which means I'll miss two races, so there's no point in continuing. Thanks to everyone for the support. I'll be back."
The Mossos d'Esquadra have opened an official investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The Royal Spanish Motorcycle Federation released a statement following the news. "The RFME wishes to express its deepest condolences to his family, friends, team, and all his loved ones during this time of immense sorrow," it said. "The Spanish motorcycling community unites today in remembering and respecting Samuel, sharing the grief of the entire motorsport family."
Motorsports Spain also paid tribute, extending its condolences to Levy's family, friends and loved ones, 'Rest in peace,' the organisation added.
