Body of elderly foreign swimmer found off Cuevas del Almanzora beach

Emergency services suspect accidental drowning near Pozo del Esparto

The body of a man was discovered on Friday July 11 off the Pozo del Esparto beach (pictured) in Cuevas del Almanzora, Almería, according to the 112 emergency coordination centre.

A call was made to 112 shortly after 2.30pm by a passerby who spotted a body floating in the sea approximately 100 metres from the shoreline. Emergency services quickly mobilised the 061 Health Emergency Centre, the Guardia Civil, the Red Cross, the Beaches Service and the Local Police.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that the deceased is a foreign national and that there were no signs of violence on the body. Initial indications suggest an accidental drowning, although a post-mortem examination will determine the precise cause of death.

The man, who was found wearing only a swimming costume, has not yet been formally identified. He is believed to be between 65 and 70 years old. Authorities are continuing efforts to confirm his identity.
