ARCHIVED - Youths and police clash in violent Cartagena street battle
Burned garbage containers, vandalised police cars and injured officers as young people at street party turn violent
Murcia Police are investigating a pitched battle that took place last night on the streets of the city of Cartagena, where police clashed with youths drinking in the street.
It all started because some people were reportedly playing their music too loud and were asked to turn it down. The simple warning for excessive noise quickly turned into violence, including biting and which left several officers injured.
After being called to a routine disturbance for noisy music in the Nueva Cartagena area, the police asked the young people to turn down their portable loudspeaker. And that’s when the violence started. The young people began shouting and proceeded to attack police with blows and punches on the ground and hit their police cars, as can be seen in videos recorded by neighbours and witnesses.

Several of the officers on the scene were hit by objects thrown by those involved in the incident, which hit their bulletproof vests, according to witnesses. When they were overwhelmed, reinforcements had to be called in and members of the National Police Corps were also sent to the scene.
Some of the police officers were even bitten by participants in the pitched battle. Several officers were injured, although fortunately none of them were in danger of their lives.
Neighbours assured that Nueva Cartagena is not generally a conflictive or dangerous neighbourhood, although there is an area in Urbanización Mediterráneo where “problematic people” live. People from the neighbourhood of San Antón, another less-than-reputable area, also tend to come to the area.
Many of these people, some of them minors, organise botellones (illegal street drinking sessions) in the area, causing a nuisance for the residents who live nearby.
Following the events, two young men, aged 19 and 31, remain in custody. A third, aged 17, has been arrested but has already been released because he is a minor.
Police are looking for more participants in the brawl, many of whom went on to burn trash containers afterwards, the first two in the Urbanización Mediterráneo, the epicentre of the violent episode. Among them, they are tracking the person who assaulted an officer by hitting him with a helmet.
