ARCHIVED - Vandals at the Castillo de los Moros in Cartagena cause entrances to be bricked up
The castle was occupied by the 1st Duke of Berwick during the 18th century War of the Spanish Succession
Not for the first time the actions of vandals at the historic Castillo de los Moros in Cartagena, one of the numerous old castles and fortresses in and around the city, has forced the Town Hall to take action, and this week it has been announced that the entrances to the castle are to be bricked up in order to protect both the monument and those who visit it.
It is reported that various young people took it upon themselves to throw sizeable stones from the castle walls down the hillside on which it stands above the Los Mateos district of Cartagena, and the efforts of the Policía Local, the Guardia Civil and Seprona have resulted in at least one of the under-age offenders being identified.
In response, the Town Hall has acted to protect the castle following work which was carried out in September to clear overgrowing plants from various parts of the fortification including the main entrance. At the same time a geo-technical study of the land on which the building was built was performed in order to analyse the subsoil as part of the project to learn more about the 18th-century structure.
The Castillo de los Moros was first used during the War Of the Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, when it was occupied by James FitzJames, the 1st Duke of Berwick, to combat the forces occupying the Castillo de la Concepción. It has been owned by the Town Hall of Cartagena since 1929 but for many years was not been put to any use, and its condition has gradually deteriorated over the years, along with many of the other unused fortresses along the coast.
