Storm Eowyn travels from UK to batter Spain: Weather forecast Jan 23-26

Hot on the heels of Storm Garoé, the new front will bring rain and blizzards to several parts of Spain this weekend

Weather outlook on Saturday afternoon

We’ve hardly had time for a breather after the onset of Storm Garoé earlier this week, which earned Spain the dubious honour of being one of the wettest countries in Europe for a short spell. But January’s notoriously unpredictable weather is set to continue into the weekend with the arrival of the Éowyn storm.

Storm Éowyn will rapidly intensify in the middle of the Atlantic from Friday and it will hit the UK very hard over the weekend. However, its current trajectory means that large parts of Spain are also in for heavy rain and strong winds before another front sweeps in on Sunday.

While the rain looks to be widespread, it should weaken significantly as it travels south, meaning that the Mediterranean coast should once again avoid the worst of the weather.

Thursday January 23

Much of the wet weather from earlier in the week should start to clear up on Thursday but heavy downpours are still forecast in western Andalucía and inland Spain, where there’s a chance of thunderstorms and even hail. Elsewhere, it should be a mostly dry if cloudy day.

Day-time temperatures will fall in most parts, although Murcia will still enjoy a mild 23ºC.

Andalucía has been issued with a yellow alert for heavy rain that will expire around noon.

Friday January 24

A day of transition is expected as we trade one storm front for another, and the skies will be mostly cloudy across the board with some bright spells in the Mediterranean and Balearic Islands early on.

Few changes are expected temperature-wise, however.

The weather warning has been lifted in Andalucía but Asturias, Navarra and Cantabria are under alert for strong winds on Friday. Galicia’s warning has been set to orange.

Saturday January 25

The situation will worsen as Éowyn takes hold, with the front advancing rapidly from the west of Spain to the east, resulting in widespread rain and overcast skies. Rain is not expected along the Mediterranean coast or in the Balearic Islands.

Unsurprisingly, day-time temperatures will drop throughout the country with the exception of the extreme southeast.

Galicia’s orange alert for strong gusts remains in place, while Asturias, Cantabria, Navarra and the Basque Country have been issued with yellow warnings.

Sunday January 26

Storm Éowyn will begin to weaken on Sunday but it will be replaced by a new Atlantic front from the northwest. Clear skies and low clouds are expected in eastern Spain, alongside mist and fog banks in the morning in the south, which will darken as the day progresses to become overcast.

Rain will hit the entire country except for the entire east coast, where it should remain dry.

Again, no major fluctuations in temperature are forecast.
