Spanish PM Sánchez and UN discuss Iran-Israel escalation

Prime Minister and President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to address the mounting tensions in the Middle East, condemning the latest Iranian attack on Israel and calling for urgent diplomatic intervention.

On Tuesday October 1, Israel was subjected to a large-scale missile bombardment by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, marking the second such attack in recent months. Iran has justified the strike as retaliation for the assassination of two prominent figures – Ismail Haniye, the former Hamas leader who was killed in July, and Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, who died in Beirut last Friday.

These incidents come almost a year after Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israeli civilians, sparking renewed violence in the region.

In a statement on the social network X, Sánchez expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. He condemned Iran’s actions, while simultaneously urging for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. Emphasising the need for legal accountability, Sánchez reiterated the importance of respecting international and humanitarian law.

“I have just spoken to Antonio Guterres about the alarming situation in the Middle East. The Spanish Government condemns Iran’s attack against Israel and calls for an end to this spiral of violence. In order to achieve peace, a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon is essential, and international law and international humanitarian law must be respected,” Sánchez said.

Echoing Sánchez’s words, Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement condemning the recent attacks. The Ministry urged the international community to take immediate steps to halt the escalating violence, warning of “regional escalation with unpredictable consequences”.

Spain plans to send two army planes to evacuate some 350 Spaniards trapped in Lebanon this Thursday October 3, following Israeli bombing in the country.
