Spain on track to hit 40 degrees: Weekend weather forecast May 30-June 2
The mercury will shoot up in southern Spain before levelling out as we enter the month of June

Although this year May has given us two relatively cool weeks, the month is drawing to a close with midsummer temperatures in a large part of the country, particularly in southern and inland Spain where the thermometers will generally exceed 34ºC over the next couple of days.
But the heat will be even more intense in places, with municipalities in Andalucía tipped to hit 40ºC before the mercury begins to dip again at the weekend.
“These types of episodes of extreme temperatures out of season are more likely due to climate change,” explained Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo, who added that, “what is notable is that until 2006 there were no records of 40°C or more in May.”
Thursday May 30

On Thursday, a front will brush against the north of Spain and cool winds will enter just behind it, leading to a drop in temperatures in the Cantabrian communities, the Pyrenees and a good part of the Ebro basin, where isolated downpours are also likely.
On the other hand, the heat will continue to build in central and southern Spain and the Balearic Islands, where the thermometers will swing between 34 and 36ºC. In the Guadalquivir valley and inland Huelva, the mercury could creep up to 39 or 40ºC, and most of the country is in for an uncomfortably torrid night.
A yellow weather warning for extreme day-time temperatures has been issued in Sevilla, Córdoba and Jaén.
Friday May 31

On Friday, the Aemet expert predicts that “temperatures will drop in much of the north and east of the country and in the Balearic Islands.” The decrease in some areas “may be notable”, up to 6°C or 8°C lower.
But again, the temperatures won’t change much in the southwest, and could even rebound in the Guadalquivir. In large parts of Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura, the mercury won’t dip below 20°C at night and that elusive 40°C figure could be reached again at the height of the day.
There could be showers in the extreme north, points in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands and some afternoon showers in inland mountain areas.
Saturday June 1

On the first day of the new month, the day-time temperatures will drop pretty much across the board, and the evening too will be much cooler. Even so, there’s a good chance that temperatures of 35°C or more will be recorded in the Sevilla countryside.
Sunday June 2

As June takes hold, the weather will progressively stabilise, although some dry storms are possible in the extreme south, coupled with some weak showers in the southeast.
The mercury will fall once more in the southwest of the country and the Balearic Islands while slight increases are forecast in the rest of the country.
