ARCHIVED - Plans announced for water and wildlife park in San Javier
Ecologists are likely to object to a new development so close to the Mar Menor
The Town Hall of San Javier has published information concerning the proposed construction of a water and zoological park similar to Terra Natura in the city of Murcia, to be located in the area of La Calavera.
La Calavera is just over a kilometre inland from the Mar Menor and is currently a rural area, and the Town Hall explains that the project would be of considerable interest to the municipality and for this reason it is being proposed on land which is categorized as non-buildable.
No details have been made public concerning the size of the investment needed, the estimated completion date or the identity of the promoter, but the project is now on public display allowing comments, suggestions and objections from all interested parties, and it appears likely that there will be plenty of opposition to the idea. Ecologists and environmentalists will doubtless point to the water park as an example of how easy it is for Town Halls to disregard the accepted need for a halt to construction in the vicinity of the Mar Menor, and for the natural landscape to be restored and maintained rather than bulldozered in the interests of economic gain.
