One dead and five injured in two separate Orihuela Costa car crashes
A 48-year-old man was killed in a two-car collision on the N-332 near Torrevieja

A tragic traffic incident on Wednesday morning, July 9, resulted in the death of a 48-year-old Spanish man on one of the Orihuela Costa's most congested roadways. The fatal accident took place on the N-332 bypass outside Torrevieja, a route that handles more than 50,000 vehicles daily during the peak summer month of July.
The collision happened at approximately 10am near kilometre 54.4 of the bypass, close to the Ferrís interchange where traffic from the CV-95 merges onto the main dual carriageway. Preliminary investigations indicate that two vehicles travelling toward Cartagena collided in what appears to have been a rear impact crash.
A 28-year-old man sustained minor injuries and was transported to Torrevieja Hospital for treatment. Despite intensive resuscitation attempts by emergency medical staff, the 48-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are examining whether the deceased driver might have experienced a medical episode that contributed to him losing control of the vehicle prior to the crash.
This portion of the N-332 experiences chronic congestion throughout the year, with traffic jams becoming particularly severe during summer months. The single lane configuration in each direction creates bottlenecks that frequently appear on national traffic authority (DGT) congestion reports, sometimes lasting up to nine hours at a time.
Road widening projects for this section have remained stalled for more than ten years, despite repeated requests from local authorities and residents.
Just two hours after this fatal collision, Torrevieja emergency services responded to another serious incident on the same stretch of the N-332. This second crash occurred at kilometre 61 near the ring road and Private Hospital overpass.
The accident began when an elderly male driver reportedly lost consciousness due to a cardiac condition. He lost control of the car, which left the roadway and rolled onto its side in a drainage channel running alongside the road. The impact also knocked over a street light.
Four Spanish citizens were inside the overturned vehicle: two men and two women, all family members. They became trapped inside the wreckage and were unable to escape. Fire department personnel conducted a complex two-hour extraction operation to safely remove all occupants.
All four accident victims were taken to Torrevieja University Hospital for treatment. The driver suffered a head trauma, the front seat passenger sustained chest injuries, one rear passenger had a fractured arm and the fourth person received treatment for minor injuries.
