ARCHIVED - New Murcia solar power plant will provide energy for 25,000 homes
The Algibicos farm is under construction in Baños y Mendigo
A new solar power plant in Baños y Mendigo, on the southern side of the mountains which separate the city of Murcia from the Campo de Cartagena, is now under construction and will supply enough energy for 25,000 homes when it is complete.
The “Algibicos” farm will produce 49.08 megawatts of power and produce some 93 gigawatts per year, although that is a fairly long way off yet as the symbolic laying of the first brick – or in this case the first solar panel – only took place on Tuesday, the honours being done by José Ballesta, the Mayor of Murcia, in the kind of mid-February sunshine which underlines the potential for solar power in the Costa Cálida! When completely operational the plant will avoid the emission of 8,400 tons of carbon dioxide, 17,575 kilos of sulphur dioxide and 12,300 kilos of nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere every year.
Occupying an area of 85 hectares, it will consist of a total of 130,000 solar panels with a useful life of at least 30 years, and it is hoped that the installation of these devices will be completed by October of this year.
The Algibicos initiative is a project undertaken at an investment cost of around 40 million euros by the Swiss company EKZ Renewables in collaboration with Murcia-based Synergia Energy Solutions, and was first put forward in 2015. EKZ already operate similar plants in Germany, France and Portugal, but this is their first venture in Spain.
At present there are 28 solar power plants in the municipality of Murcia generating a total of 370 kilowatts, many of them located on public buildings such as sports centres, museums and libraries.
