The RM-701 road which leads out of the city of Lorca towards La Parroquia and Vélez Rubio was remained closed to traffic on Thursday morning after a section of the medieval city wall collapsed onto it on Wednesday on account of the heavy rain which fell in the first half of the week.
The incident occurred just outside the city close to the road which winds up to the castle, and due to the structure being officially categorized as a cultural asset Town Hall staff are not permitted to withdraw the debris or even to touch it. For this reason, the road remained cordoned off, although access to the castle and the Parador hotel was possible via the Ribera de San Miguel road.
