ARCHIVED - Fire in fruit and veg distributor causes huge column of smoke in Cartagena
Within a few minutes the warehouse was totally destroyed
Twenty firefighters and six heavy vehicles from the Firefighting, Rescue and Civil Protection Service of Cartagena City Council (SEIS) managed to control a voracious fire which broke out in a fruit and vegetable distribution warehouse belonging to the UPPER group in the Polígono Industrial Cabezo Beaza industrial park in Cartagena on Wednesday afternoon, and although there were no injuries, the premises was totally gutted.
The fire began around five in the afternoon and appears to have originated in an area containing materials for recycling, which were stacked onto pallets in a patio at the rear of the building.
The fifteen workers inside the distribution plant were able to escape without injury when a lorry driver saw the flames and raised the alert.
The fire spread rapidly, generating a fierce fire which consumed the combustible packaging materials and pallets within, quickly leading to the collapse of the roof.
A huge column of smoke could be seen from various parts of the Mar Menor.
The 2,500 square metre warehouse is located in Luxembourg Avenue on the industrial estate, but fortunately the fire was contained and only this one building was affected, the neighbouring warehouses used by the same company unaffected, as were the vehicles parked outside the building loading and unloading goods for distribution which were evacuated as soon as the alarm was raised.
The cause of the blaze is not clear.
