ARCHIVED - Eight deaths in the last 24 hours as fatalities reach 300 in the Murcia Region on Tuesday
Hospitalisations continue to increase with more than 10,000 ACTIVE CASES in the region
It’s incomprehensible that every time the covid case figures are published, social media is filled with comments from people who obviously don´t read anything more than a headline and attack the information being supplied as fake news or continue to call into question the validity of information being supplied about the covid crisis worldwide.
How many people have to die before these individuals start to get the message that this virus is lethal, is debilitating tens of thousands of people, has killed over a million people worldwide and is spreading rapidly throughout Europe, the situation here in Spain one of uncontrolled transmission. The point of publishing these figures is NOT to scaremonger, NOT to cause panic, NOT to “control the masses”, but to inform, ensure that residents who may not speak Spanish are fully aware of the potential risks, the legislation affecting them and can make intelligent decisions for themselves based on the facts at that moment. The MIS-INFORMATION, the scaremongering, the lies, the false facts, the denial, the arguing, the anger, is all taking place on social media, making this whole situation un-necessarily angry, confrontational and damaging the mental health of many people and it’s time to stand-up to social media bullies who try and stop the sharing of relevant information. We all have a voice and any of us who wants correct information can support it, and not leave the stage only for those who are trying to constantly belittle the deaths of those dying from covid, undermine the efforts of the authorities to control its spread and attacking those who are making information available for everybody else. All we have to say when they criticise, attack and belittle is “I want this information”.
None of us wants this crisis, but we have little choice other than to do our best to do as is requested by the health authorities, try to keep positive, keep ourselves safe and understand that there will be a “post-covid”, and being informed is part of that process.
Here in the Region of Murcia, the figures may not be thousands of deaths daily, simply because we are a region of only 1.5 million people, but even here we have a region-wide transmission rate of 349 cases per 100.000 of population over the last 7 days and of 600.8 over the last 14 days, a worryingly high rate which we have to take into consideration when moving around outside of our homes.
By municipality on Tuesday: Note, the first figure shown is the actual number of cases diagnosed in the last 7 days, the second is the IA rate for the last 7 days (number of cases per 100,000 of population): In brackets the number of cases is indicated as either a positive or negative compared to the situation on Monday when this breakdown was last published, taking into consideration that patients are recovering and being removed from the list all the time)
Abanilla 21/342 (-1) ( This means 21 cases in the last 7 days and an IA rate of 342, so just below average, with 1 less case since the last figures were published on Friday)

But the figures which really matter are the fatalities and hospitalisations and these figures are deteriorating, exactly as the regional health authority warned when the number of cases started to climb.
Fatalities:
In the last 24 hours eight people have died from coronavirus, two females and six males, aged 64, 66, 69, 79, 81, 82, 88 and 92, three from the Murcia City municipality, two from Cartagena and the remainder from Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco and Lorca.Their deaths take the regional total to 300.
Hospitalisations:
As of today, there are 491 people hospitalised with coronavirus here in the Murcia Region, with 24 new patients having been hospitalised in the last 24 hours. Of these, 86 are in intensive care units. Both of these are record highs. Our hospitals are creating more ward space, using facilities normally allocated for post-surgical care and rehabilitation, but this will affect their ability to carry out non-urgent operations and the health service admits to being pre-occupied about the rising figures, although maintains that it is currently coping well and has the capacity for the current level of patients. 9,616 patients with mild cases are in home isolation.
New cases
During the last 24 hours the number of PCR tests was relatively low, at just 3,675, identifying 523 new cases, 221 in the municipality of Murcia, 41 in Cartagena, 30 in Cieza, 27 in Molina de Segura, 21 in Torre Pacheco and the remainder scattered around the region, the total number of active cases in the region now being 10,107.The total number of cases diagnosed to date in the regin by PCR test is now 34,092
Recoveries: The total number of recoveries is now 21,979.
Social gatherings responsable for 75% of contagions
During the presentation of today’s figures, regional health service spokesman, Jaime Pérez, reiterated a call for social responsibility, emphasising the importance of taking particular care during the weekend festivities of All Saints and All Souls, a time when families traditionally gather to pay their respects to the deceased, stating that 75% of the cases in the region originated in social contact.
