ARCHIVED - Covid outbreaks mean mandatory use of masks in Balearic Islands from now on
The Balearic islands joins Catalonia in amending new normality decrees to enforce the use of facemasks when outside of the home
Elsewhere in Spain the use of masks is only obligatory inside buildings or in situations where social distancing is not possible.Click for useful visitor information
The Balearic Islands Government has taken the decision to make the wearing of facemasks mandatory in all public spaces except on beaches, when using swimming pools, when food or drink is being consumed or sports are practiced.
The decision comes after the Balearic Epidemiology Service reported that there are now nine active outbreaks of Covid-19 on the Balearic Islands, one in Ibiza and the rest in Mallorca, with 56 active cases.
In total there are 134 positive cases of COVID-19 in the Balearics.
This change in the regulations regarding the use of masks will be published either Friday or Saturday in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands, modifying the decree of “new normality”.
Yesterday Catalonia (Cataluña/Catalunya)announced the mandatory use of masks following a series of outbreaks, the worst of which has resulted in the compulsory confinement of 207,000 people in the comarca of Segriá, within the Lleida province of the region. Anyone over the age of 6 is now liable to a fine of 100 euros for not wearing a mask in public, regardless of whether social distancing is being practised or not, the same rules which will apply in the Balearic Islands.
Both of these areas are tourism “hotspots” and whether the measure will deter tourists or not remains to be seen.
Yesterday Scotland took the decision to leave Spain off its list of safe countries. As a result, anyone returning to Scotland from Spain will still have to quarantine for 13 days, a blow to the airlines which have already confirmed Spanish routes this summer.
Yesterday the Ministry of Health confirmed that Spain has 67 active outbreaks in different areas of the country. Yesterday 257 new cases were confirmed in Spain; the highest figure since the pandemic was in the ascent.
