ARCHIVED - Cartagena Town Hall bricks up properties to deter squatters
Houses in the Los Naranjos area of La Palma are being bricked up by council workers
In the face of growing concern over the number of squatters occupying unfinished properties in the Los Naranjos development in La Palma, the Town Hall of Cartagena has bricked up doors and windows and is preparing to block access to the road in which they are located.
As well as preventing entry into the homes themselves the Town Hall is also contemplating blocking off the cul-de-sac in which they are located by means of another brick wall. Alternatively, the street could be closed by means of a metallic fence, which would make it possible to see whether people have made their way inside, and this option would be both cheaper and more advantageous in terms of security.
During a visit to the site Councillor Manuel Padín also reaffirmed the Town Hall’s commitment to addressing the issues associated with the litter and waste which have accumulated in the neighbouring street of Calle Ébano, where two other properties are reported to be occupied by squatters, and the associated proliferation of insects.
