ARCHIVED - Campaign to protect feral cats lowers speed limits in La Unión
Old rubbish containers will be recycled to provide cat shelters
The town of La Unión is set to become the first in Spain to introduce a new design of road sign during January, with drivers being warned to slow down in order to avoid running over the stray and feral cats living in the north of the town centre.
The speed limit is to be cut to 30 km/h in Calle Padre Manjón, Calle Dos de Mayo and Calle Tomás Maestre, three of the roads which run around the old and unused electricity installations, where it is reported that earlier this year cats were being run over at the rate of 3 or 4 a month. This, according to Juan Luis Segado of the Policía Local, justifies the new signs, which he compares to those warning drivers of the hazards caused by kangaroos in Australia or camels in Morocco.
Introducing lower speed limits may seem an unusual move, but a regional law passed in 2017 obliges Town Halls to control and protect colonies of feral cats, sterilizing them and returning them to their groups. In other words, La Unión is simply doing its job, and other steps being taken include the use of old rubbish containers to create shelters for the cats as well as castration and sterilization campaigns.
Within La Unión there is another colony of cats near the site where a new mining museum is being built, but the Town Hall are waiting until the work finishes before deciding whether more speed restrictions are needed.
