Brit found dead in the waters off the coast of Mallorca
The elderly man had been snorkelling in a remote spot near Magaluf
An older British man has sadly been found dead in the waters off the coast of Mallorca.
The elderly man, believed to be in his 60s or 70s, was discovered wearing only his shorts and a mask, sparking a police investigation into his sudden and tragic demise.
The body was pulled from the sea near the popular resort of Magaluf, a favourite among tourists seeking sun, sand and snorkelling adventures. The grim discovery was made by a Civil Protection boat on Tuesday October 1, and the local Guardia Civil launched an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
According to sources, the man was likely snorkelling in a remote spot near the Malgrats Islands, a picturesque and uninhabited archipelago opposite the Bay of Santa Ponsa. The area is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and stunning marine life, making it a hotspot for snorkelling and diving excursions.
While the exact cause of death is still unknown, officials believe drowning is the most likely explanation. However, they are also investigating the possibility of a pre-existing health condition that may have contributed to the tragedy.
It’s not yet clear whether the Briton was a Mallorca resident or on holiday in the area.
The Malgrats Islands Natural Reserve is a popular destination for snorkelling and diving, with many hotels offering guided tours to explore the area's stunning cave system.
This devastating incident comes just weeks after a similar tragedy occurred in Lanzarote, where a 59-year-old British man drowned while scuba diving in a well-known beauty spot.
The tourist was pulled from the sea off Playa Chicha beach, but despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
