ARCHIVED - Basque Country becomes fifth Spanish region to lock down as the second wave hits hard
A ban on movement between municipalities is in force throughout the Basque region as well as perimeter confinement
The Basque Country has become the fifth of Spain’s 17 regions to re-impose a closure of the boundaries with other parts of the country in an effort to slow the spread of the second wave of Covid-19, following declaration at the weekend of a new national state of emergency in response to the pandemic.
The regional government re-introduced the measure as of 6.00 in the morning on Tuesday while and has also barred residents from travelling between one municipality and another, thus returning much of the general population to the conditions of the first “lockdown”, which came into force across the whole of Spain in mid-March. Exceptions to the ban on movement include those travelling to and from work and those or school as well as those with medical appointments or travelling to look after ailing relations.
The strict measures were announced on Monday by Gotzone Sagardui, the minister for Health in the regional government, after the conditions of the new national state of emergency stipulated that each region can implement whatever measures it sees fit without fear of them being overturned by the courts: only last week a proposal to ban gatherings of over 6 people in the Basque Country had been annulled by the regional high court.
With the infection rate in the Basque Country having risen to over 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days the region now joins those of Aragón, Asturias, Navarra and La Rioja – all of them in the north of the country - in effectively isolating itself from neighbouring Autonomous Communities, and at the same time the regional government has not only re-introduced its ban on gatherings of more than 6 people but has also confirmed a night-time curfew between 23.00 and 6.00.
