ARCHIVED - Authorized pig farming land up for auction 400 metres from Camposol
Permission was given for a macro-piggery to be reactivated two years ago
The plans to open a large pig farm just 400 metres from Sector A of the residential development of Camposol in the north of Mazarrón appear to have hit problems, with the plot of land concerned having been put up for auction by the Spanish tax collection office, but at the same time there exists the possibility that with licences having been granted an enterprising businessman may see a chance to snap up a bargain and make more progress towards the initiative getting off the ground than the current owner has done in the last 18 months.
It was agreed by the local government on 6th April 2018 that a licence should be granted to re-activate the large piggery, which just three years previously had been decided against after vociferous protests from residents of Camposol. But two years ago the local council decided firstly to grant a licence for a pig farming concern on Plot 53 of Polígono 8 in the El Saladillo area of the municipality, and secondly to issue a works licence in order to restore the pig farm to operational condition.
The documentation which was presented when licences were first applied for specified that on the plot concerned, which has an area of 81,189 square metres, the aim was to fatten up young pigs from a body weight of 6 kilos to 20 kilos (taking them from suckling pig to feeder pig weight). No modification of the existing structural elements was envisaged, but numerous repairs, replacements and other work was identified as being necessary regarding the pens in which the animals were to be kept, the disposal of faeces and other waste, the water supply and other aspects.
It was also specified that the facility would be able to house up to 11,990 piglets at any given time.
The official value of the property is stated on the national government’s investment portal as being 167,249 euros but no minimum bid has been established, and on the morning of 6th February 2020 (the second day day after bidding opened) no bids had been received.
With there being an off-chance that the land could be picked up at a knock-down price, who knows if a group of Camposol residents might be tempted to put in a low offer before the deadline of 18.00 on 24th February? If no-on else bids, in this way they could make sure that the rustic scent of pig-raising activities does not perfume the air in the development…
