ARCHIVED - Asturias imposes ban on entering and leaving the region
Similar measures in 5 northern regions as the second-wave Covid infections increase
Following the declaration at the weekend of a new national state of emergency throughout Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic, under the terms of which each of the 17 regions is empowered to implement restrictions on movement at the discretion of the regional governments, it was confirmed on Monday that Asturias, on the northern coast, is to join the list of those effectively closing their boundaries with other regions.
Announcing the decision, Adrián Borbón, the president of the regional government, explained that the isolation of the region will become effective at midnight on Tuesday, extending to the whole of Asturias a measure which had already been applied to the cities of Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés last Friday. Sr Barbón went on to add that the aim is “to save lives”, and that curfew times in the region are to be established between midnight and 6.00 in the morning while bars and restaurants are required to close at 23.00.
The region of Asturias now becomes one of five regions Basque Country, Aragón, Asturias, Navarra and La Rioja – all of them in the north of the country - isolating themselves from neighbouring Autonomous Communities. This coincides with a worrying rise in infection numbers all over Spain, but particularly in areas where the colder weather means that people are more likely to congregate at indoor venues rather than in the open air.
