ARCHIVED - Sundays in March, virtual enhanced reality tours of the Roman city of Cartagena
Step back 2,000 years and see the city of Carthago Nova in its heyday!
An innovative new way of visiting the various Roman archaeological sites in Cartagena, including the Roman Theatre Museum, has been introduced in Cartagena, making use of enhanced reality goggles and tablets which enable visitors to see how the monumental buildings would have looked in their heyday 2000 years ago.
The “Carthago Nova 2.0” tour is being held every Sunday during March at 11.30 and is in Spanish, beginning at the Roman Theatre Museum, and starts with a visit to the exhibition rooms of the museum itself with explanations of the political propaganda exercise which lay behind the ornamental decoration included in the architecture.
After learning about the museum, visitors don their 3-D goggles and view the theatre through a three dimensional world; quite an experience!
The visit continues with the Roman Forum district, a site occupying 3,000 square metres, where by using tablets visitors can see for themselves reconstructions of the thermal baths complex, its cool, warm and hot rooms, the banqueting halls of the Atrium with their paintings and mosaics and the temple of the goddess Isis.
This tour is designed to appeal to visitors of all ages, and the full cost is 15 euros.
Commentary is in Spanish, but both the goggles and the tablet offer commentary in English.
The Carthago Nova 2.0 experience is being introduced in March alongside the “Cartagena, sabor Tres Culturas” tours on Saturdays, during which visitors explore the medieval city of the 13th century while seeing the keep of the Castillo de la Concepción, the Roman Theatre and the church of Santa María la Vieja before sampling “tapas” snacks based on menus from the Middle Ages! This tour is priced at 13 euros (10 euros for reduced entry categories.
Tickets can be acquired at all of the Cartagena Puerto de Culturas museums and centres.
