ARCHIVED - Newly reformed Plaza del Galúa in La Manga del Mar Menor inaugurated
The plaza will be dedicated to the pilots of the Air Academy who died during training off the coast last year
The newly reformed Plaza del Galúa in La Manga del Mar Menor was inaugurated this Friday incorporating new viewing points, improvements to beach access, new urban furniture, planting and energy efficient lighting, and is dedicated to the pilots of the General Air Academy who died last year, when they were conducting practice and training flights over the waters of La Manga.
The budget for the project is 786,772 euros, co-financed by European Union FEDER regional development funds (80%) and the Autonomous Regional Government (20%). Cartagena City Council collaborated both with the provision of the land required and with the technical supervision of the project, as well as execution of the work.
1,500 square meters of usable space has been created, with new viewing points and pedestrian walkways alongside the sea, the creation of a grandstand with wooden benches and natural stone stairs, new urban furniture to create shady areas, improved access to the viewpoints and the beach for people with reduced mobility, the creation of 400 square meters of natural planting, the renewal of the lighting in the area with 43 LED points, the renewal of the drinking water network and an irrigation network for the new vegetation.
The project comprises a series of platforms-viewpoints to give views of most of La Manga from the rocky area next to the Galúa hotel, and is located next to the existing breakwater. These viewpoints are linked together and lead down to the sand on the beach via a series of wooden platforms.
The plaza connects the streets of Camino Proa and Camino Rompiente to give continuity to the promenade area. On calle Camino Proa traffic will be allowed through a controlled manner and on the calle Camino Rompiente, parking lots will be set up next to the buildings, in order to free up the space currently occupied by cars along the coast.
