ARCHIVED - Cartagena Town Hall to spend 5.7 million euros on flood protection infrastructures
Work is to be undertaken in La Algameca, Los Nietos, Los Urrutias and Estrella de Mar
It has been announced by Ana Belen Castejón, the Mayoress of Cartagena, that 2.7 million euros are to be invested in 13 public works projects the largest of which are designed to solve the problem of flooding caused by heavy storms by late 2021 or early 2022.
Sra Castejón reports that the most ambitious project is the modernization of the waste water pumping station in the Plaza de España, one of the results of which will be to reduce the amount of water which runs off into the Rambla de Benipila and cascades down to La Algameca on the coast in times of heavy rain. This project alone is budgeted at 2.25 million euros and will be undertaken in two phases.
In addition, various tasks are to be undertaken in the Mar Menor area of the municipality in an attempt to reduce the damage done by future “gota fría” storms like the ones which have hit the Costa Cálida over the last seven months, and at the same time water supply and sewage networks are to be improved in Los Nietos, Los Urrutias and Estrella de Mar.
Other improvements to the drainage and sewage networks are planned in Llano del Beal, Los Dolores, Pozo Estrecho, Alumbres, El Albujón and Canteras, as well as in the historic city centre.
