ARCHIVED - Cartagena continues to condition beaches in spite of coronavirus threat
Beaches in the Mar Menor are being prepared for the traditional influx of spring sunseekers
There is still a month to go until Easter Week arrives but all along the Costa Cálida, on the coast of the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, preparations are under way to greet what is hoped will be an influx of sun-seeking tourists in early April and in Cartagena beach infrastructures are already being installed.
There is a certain degree of apprehension within the tourism sector due to the coronavirus epidemic, but in the Region of Murcia there is still optimism that the attractions of the beaches and the Semana Santa processions will prove too great to resist for visitors from elsewhere in Spain, particularly as most of the apartments owned on the coast belong to Spanish nationals from the interior areas of Spain, who have always been the backbone of the tourism sector in Murcia.
Incidences of coronavirus in the region are lower than elsewhere in Spain at the moment, and the higher temperatures are currently believed to limit the lifetime of the virus, although the virus is still so young that scientific data to back this belief up is still not available.
Following the three episodes of severe weather during the winter – two “gota fría” storms in September and December and Storm Gloria in January - a substantial amount of cleaning-up and repairs were required, and in the large municipality of Cartagena, while wooden walkways and other infrastructures are put in place the seaweed which has accumulated along the shore is also being removed.
According to Deputy Mayoress Noelia Arroyo, in the Mar Menor work is already under way at the beaches of Mar de Cristal, Villas Caravaning and Cala del Pino to make sure that walkways, foot showers, shaded pergolas and waste bins are in place and working correctly, while work to restore the sand to optimum condition continues on other beaches. This is the case, for example, in Los Nietos, Los Urrutias, Islas Menores and at the beach of Cavanna in La Manga, while at Playa Honda and Playa Paraíso further work has been made necessary by the strong winds of last week.
At the same time, repairs have been completed on the seafront walk in Punta Brava and Los Urrutias and the team of workers is moving on this week to Playa Honda, as regardless of the evolution of the virus, the beaches must be ready for the traditional holiday period to support the local tourist sector.
