ARCHIVED - 13th October, 3.5-kilometre swim around the headland of Cabo de Palos
The popular open water swimming event attracts 240 swimmers and is easy to watch from the shore
The 6th annual addition of the “Timon Cap” open water swimming event is being held on Sunday 13th October in Cabo de Palos, where over 240 swimmers will set out on a 3.5-kilometre course beginning at the marina and ending at the Playa de Levante.
Such is the geography of the headland that the finish line is in fact only a few metres from the start by land, making this an easy event for spectators to follow – it ought to be possible to combine the race with a walking tour of the coastline, taking in the lighthouse and the many coves and tiny beaches along the way!
From the competitors’ point of view, on the other hand, this is an event to be taken seriously and has attracted swimmers not only from all over Spain but also from abroad. It is becoming extremely popular due to the attractive location, the relatively warm sea temperature at this time of year – close to 20ºC – and the abundance of marine flora and fauna in the marine reserve of Cabo de Palos and Isla Hormigas, through part of which the swimmers pass.
The event on 13th October begins at 10.00, when the competitors take to the water in the marina, and racing starts 15 minutes later at the mouth of the port. The course is marked by buoys and numerous medical and rescue staff will be following the swimmers in boats and canoes.
Go along and enjoy the atmosphere, go for a walk and then find one of the many nice little bars in Cabo de Palos; there's nothing better than a cooled beer and a plate of something fishy after watching other people do so much exercise!!!!
