ARCHIVED - 100-year-old tree felled by gota fría storm converted into stylish bench in Cartagena
A Town Hall gardener has taken on the project in his free time
Part of the trunk of a hundred-year-old pine tree which blew down during the “gota fría” storm which hit south-eastern Spain in September has been converted into a stylish bench which now adorns the patio of the San Miguel Town Hall administration building in Cartagena.
The tree previously stood in the old Town Hall nursery in the Barrio de la Concepción district but now the bench stands in front of the toys collected for children in need this Christmas: further donations can be made until 27th December (click here for further details).
At the moment the new bench bears a provisional plaque with the names of the people who made it, one of whom is a Town Hall gardener who has contributed a large amount of his spare time to the initiative, and in time it will stand in a miniature zen garden based on the Roman city of Carthago Nova which evolved into the Cartagena we know today.
