ARCHIVED - Animal welfare groups denounce torture of dogs near Murcia
The dogs had been beaten and strangled to death before being buried in shallow graves
The animal welfare groups Paes and Almohadillas Felices have reported what they describe as evidence of dogs being tortured and killed between Alcantarilla and the village of Barqueros, on a plot of land close to the RM-C1 road, where the remains of four animals were found with their rear legs tied together and nooses around their necks.
The groups were alerted to the discovery on Friday afternoon by a man who had seen the bodies of animals piled up while he was mending a tractor wheel nearby. At first he thought they were sheep but on moving nearer to take a look he realized they were four large dogs, and during the evening members of Almohadillas Felices arrived to inspect the scene.
As it was dark they couldn’t see much at first, but soon found a patch of earth which had clearly been moved recently and began digging. In this way they found the recently buried bodies of the dogs, all of which had been tied up, beaten and strangled.
The case has been reported to the Guardia Civil, who have taken statements from the owners of the plot while investigations continue.
