Águilas beaches lead the way in accessibility for disabled people
New facilities on La Colonia beach improve access for the elderly and those with reduced mobility

The town of Águilas continues to enhance its reputation as one of the most inclusive coastal destinations in the Region of Murcia thanks to new accessibility improvements designed to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can enjoy the sea.
The latest development is the installation of a specially designed bathing island at La Colonia beach. This structure allows elderly bathers and those with reduced mobility to access the water safely and comfortably.
The new installation includes a seated platform with benches for those who prefer to remain stable while enjoying the sea, as well as a handrail-assisted area for walking or swimming with extra support.
This initiative forms part of the local council’s broader strategy to promote inclusion and remove barriers to public spaces. Councillor for Inclusion, José Antonio Consentino, explained that Águilas has doubled the number of assisted bathing services on its urban beaches this year in response to growing demand.
These services involve trained lifeguards helping individuals from their wheelchairs into amphibious chairs, which are designed to travel over sand and float in water.
The improvements are supported by a wider project within the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations. Funded by the European Union through the Next Generation-EU programme, and part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the project includes the addition of amphibious mobility aids, such as crutches, walkers and chairs, along with flexible walkways to make both the beach and the sea more accessible.
“These new facilities position Águilas as a tourist destination that prioritises inclusivity and accessibility,” said Consentino. “We’re creating a safe and comfortable environment for all visitors, regardless of their specific needs.”
