Click HereFollowing several discussions between all those involved in putting on the huge carnival in Águilas every year, the decision has been made to suspend the 2021 edition.
The Mayoress of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, said: “As mayor, it is one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, but as a government our responsibility for the health and well-being of Águilas does not end with municipal spaces; We have the obligation to watch over all citizens and Carnival implies, not only during the three weeks that the party lasts but throughout the year, close contact between all the members of the Peñas and all those who work to make our amazing party happen".
A decision that, although painful, said Moreno, "is the most responsible, given the health situation that we are going through due to the crisis caused by Covid-19 and that has been agreed with the Federation and with all the Carnival clubs."
“Our Carnival is a party revolving around magnificent parades that are the result of previous months of intense work, but there are also acts such as the release of La Mussona; the Battle between Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma; the Proclamation of the Muse; the Carnival at night with thousands of people dancing and enjoying themselves; the events that take place in closed venues and a long list of activities that are the essence of our big party. We cannot consider any alternative to this because if we did so, the Águilas Carnival would lose its hallmarks ”, stated the mayor.
Before concluding, the first mayor from Aguileña thanked “everyone's mature, responsible and coherent reaction. The Federation of Peñas, Peñas del Carnaval, dance schools, designers and dressmakers, teams of make-up artists and hairdressers and the entire hospitality sector have accepted the situation from the first moment with admirable integrity despite the economic setback that this is going to mean for Águilas. Now we can look towards Carnival 2022, which I am sure will be the best in our history”.
