ARCHIVED - 80 kilos of waste removed from the Mediterranean by volunteer divers in Cabo de Palos
Beaches were cleaned by a land-based team while the divers took to coves of Cabo de Palos
A group of volunteer divers belonging to the Federación de Actividades Subacuáticas de la Región de Murcia met on Saturday in Cabo de Palos and donned their gear to remove a total of 80 kilos of waste and rubbish from the Mediterranean, aided by an underwater drone.
At the same time another team based on land walked along the shore cleaning the beaches of the area, all as part of an initiative based at the Naranjito dive centre and taking place mainly in the small rocky coves of Cabo de Palos. In general terms the participants report that the water was fairly free of waste, but larger quantities were found on the beaches before the terrestrial and aquatic brigades enjoyed a well-earned paella!
