ARCHIVED - 5th January 2020 Three Kings parade in Cartagena
The Three Kings arrive by boat to collect last minute wish lists in person
The 5th January is the last big evening in the seasonal festivities in Spain, as the Three Kings, Baltasar, Melchor and Gaspar, arrive to deliver their presents before the children wake up the following morning.
In Cartagena the procession of the Three Kings is a loud and colourful affair, attended by virtually the whole city, with lots of floats, bands, music, toys and of course, their Royal Highnesses themselves.
During the Cabalgata tons of sweets and thousands of toys are flung into the crowds, so don´t forget to bring a carrier bag, a handtorch to locate stray sweets and a small fold up umbrella which rapidly transforms into a super sweet catcher when inverted!
This year 17 large floats will participate in the parade, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, swans and a boat, Peppa Pig, a Chinese Dragon, Toy Story and the Lion King are amongst the selected themes.
The Three Kings arrive by boat at 11.30 in the port, just opposite the Town Hall, and walk the short distance to the Palacio Consistorial via plaza Héroes de Cavite, where thousands of people await their arrival, enjoying the Fiesta de Bienvenida. From here, they enter the Palacio Consistorial, greeting the children below from the balcony of the town hall before descending to collect wish lists from the children in person until 14.00.
But the main event of the day begins at 18.30, when the “Cabalgata”, or parade, begins in the Alameda de San Antón at the crossroads with Francisco de Borja. The participants then follow a route via Paseo de Alfonso XIII, Juan Fernández, Juan XXIII, Santa Florentina, Calle del Carmen, Tolosa Latour, Sagasta, Puerta de Murcia and Calle Mayor before reaching the Palacio Consistorial in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
