ARCHIVED - 34 tons of biomass removed recently from the beaches of San Pedro del Pinatar
Since 2017 around 5,000 tons of biomass have been cleared from the shore of the Mar Menor
Miriam Pérez, the head of the Mar Menor department in the regional government, visited the beaches of Villananitos and La Puntica in San Pedro del Pinatar, at the northern end of the lagoon, on Tuesday in order to see for herself the progress being made in removing the marine vegetation which has accumulated along the shore as a result of the effects of Storm Gloria, according to a government press release.
The press release explains that the appearance of so much organic material is due to the gale-force winds of 19th and 20th January and the heavy rainfall which caused localized flooding and the consequent runoff of fresh water into the Mar Menor. To date, Sra Pérez states, 34 tons of marine vegetation have been removed and work will continue in the coming weeks as the government seeks to avoid the plants beginning to rot, a process which would lead to there being more organic material and nutrients in the water of the lagoon.
Since 2017 an investment of close to 2 million euros has facilitated the removal of some 5,000 tons of biomass from the shoreline of the Mar Menor, and Sra Pérez estimates that another 1.5 million euros will be added to the total this year.
Accompanying Miriam Pérez was Visitación Martínez, the Mayoress of San Pedro, who reiterated the need for the beaches of the municipality to be in the best possible condition as well as repeating her calls for all public administration bodies to take coordinated and rapid action to protect the marine environment of the lagoon.
