ARCHIVED - 108th birthday for Totana resident: a lot to be said for the quality of life in the Costa Cálida
El Tío Juan Rita is the best known trovero in the Murcia Region and still participates in many musical events
Last Friday was the 108th birthday of Juan Tudela Piernas, better known as “El Tío Juan Rita”, a well-known character in the town of Totana, where he received a visit from Mayor Javier Andreo at his home to mark the occasion.
El Tío Juan Rita has for many years been admired as a “trovero”, one of those who continues the centuries-old tradition of improvised songs and who in some parts of Europe are known as troubadours. During his long career in this field he became something of a cultural ambassador both for Totana and for the Region of Murcia, and in 2010 he was named an Honorary Son of Totana. Two years later, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, a square was named after him in the south of the town, and further recognition of his achievements and contribution to Murcia’s cultural heritage came on 9th June 2018, when president Fernando López Miras presented him with the Gold Medal of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.
El Tío Juan Rita was born in Aledo on Valentine’s Day 1912, but he lived with his mother and brother in the municipality of Lorca until he got married before later moving to Totana, where he has lived for many years. He is not reported to have commented on the secret of his longevity, but it can be assumed that it has a lot to do with the healthy climate, the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and a love of good music!
In honour of the living legend, the Archivo General of Totana is currently holding a tribute to him in the form of a photographic exhibition tracing his career, featuring 54 images contributed by 33 photographers.
