€12 million roadworks to improve access to Alicante Airport

The contract will maintain and improve several major roads in Alicante province

The Spanish government is making good on its promise to drastically improve several high-capacity roads in Alicante province, starting with the main access artery to Alicante-Elche Airport. The Ministry of Transport has just awarded a €12 million contract for the maintenance of a number of major roads over the next three years, an agreement that could be extended for up to nearly five years in total.

The main focus of this project is to keep roads leading to Alicante-Elche Airport in good shape as passenger demand at the Costa Blanca flight hub continues to grow. In total, the maintenance will cover more than 136 kilometres of roads in what’s called Sector 4.

The specific roads included are:

N-340, from Orihuela to the airport
N-325, from Novelda to Crevillent
N-332, from Pilar de la Horadada to the airport
N-338, the short road linking the N-332 to the A-70
Plus, resurfacing work on the N-340 between Elche and Crevillent

To reduce the environmental impact of this project, companies bidding for the work will have to estimate how much carbon dioxide (CO2) their work will produce and include plans for energy-saving features like solar power, electric vehicles and low-energy lighting. They will also be required to submit a proposal to reduce their emissions and aim for net-zero carbon emissions within five years.

This is part of Spain’s larger goal to lower the CO2 emissions produced by everyday road maintenance. Currently, this type of work generates more than 71,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
